My name is Maria Garcia.  I am the director for Uniting Parents.  I have been with this program for the last 13 years.  I have learned so much over the years about different disabilities.  I have a degree in education and in counseling.  I was employed with the Hereford ISD prior to coming to Uniting Parents.  I have two grown daughters and a teenage son.  My oldest daughter has severe dyslexia and has compensated for many years and learned skills to help her with her dyslexia.  She just completed her cosmetology licensing boards and has had the support of the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS).  My youngest child, Joe has Down syndrome which has lead to developmental delays and speech impairment.  This has not held him back.  He is involved in the band at Randall High School and participates in Special Olympics.

Disabilities are a natural part of life and we have lived our lives with this concept in mind.

Uniting Parents is unique in that we train parents of children with disabilities to be advocates for their own child and for the families they serve.  I feel very fortunate that this program exist with the support of the Department of State Health Services and the Children with Special Health Care Needs program.

Please call us for information and support!  WE are here to share our experiences, our failures, and our successes.
